Careful Planning and Thoughtful Guidance

Estate Planning and Probate Administration Attorney Donald Meltzer

Estate planning helps you shape the future for those you love. It's the best way to make important decisions about yourself and your assets, rather than leaving the burden of those decisions to someone else. An experienced estate planning attorney guides you through the process, so that you protect your loved ones and your assets at the same time.

If you are married, recently divorced, have children, have inherited property or own a home or business, you should make use of the legal protections a will or trust affords you and your family. Call my Baton Rouge office today at 225-216-0015 to schedule an appointment. You can also contact me online.

Estate Planning Safeguards the Future

Estate planning protects you and your family. I help clients craft legal documents determining who makes important decisions about health care and finances in the event you're incapacitated. I provide a full range of protective estate planning tools to take care of the most important people in your life.

  • Wills: simple and complex, codicils and other changes to existing wills
  • Trusts: revocable and irrevocable, charitable remainder and lead trusts, trusts for minors, irrevocable life insurance trusts
  • Powers of Attorney: General powers of attorney, powers of attorney over property and healthcare, living will declarations and healthcare proxies
  • Lifetime gift planning and implementation: This enables clients to give tax-minimized gifts to their children
  • Gift tax return and preparation
  • Community property partitions
  • Elder law: Guardianships, plus planning for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
  • Prenuptial agreements
  • Post-mortem planning

Probate Administration

After the death of a loved one, it can be difficult to focus on the complex and time-consuming legal paperwork involved in being administrator of an estate. An experienced probate lawyer can guide you through the complicated process.

  • I assist in the inventory of the estate, preparing a detailed, descriptive list for the court
  • I help you pay any outstanding estate debts, administer the estate and obtain a judgment of possession
  • I handle the final accounting, getting the administrator or executor discharged from their duties when all is done

In cases in which the decedent left no will, I can file a petition with the court to appoint an administrator and help that administrator distribute the decedent's assets according to the law.

Disputes

My firm represents clients in will contests where undue influence was used to manipulate the decedent before they passed on. I also represent clients in petitions to remove a probate administrator or executor of a will.
