Donald Meltzer, Attorney at Law, Helping Clients in the Baton Rouge Area

It can be difficult to know what tomorrow may bring for you and your loved ones. However, a trust can protect you and your estate for the future and for your loved ones. An experienced attorney can help you understand the types of trusts available in Louisiana and work with you to set up an estate plan that meets your needs and your wishes.

For more than 20 years, I have been providing estate planning and probate counsel to clients in the Baton Rouge area. Call my Baton Rouge office today at 225-216-0015 to schedule an appointment. You can also contact me online.

Understanding Your Trust Options

As a knowledgeable Louisiana trusts lawyer, I will work one-on-one with you to determine what type of trust will suit your situation. There are two major types of trusts: inter vivos and testamentary trusts.

A trust that becomes effective during your life is known as an inter vivos or living trust. This type of trust can be either revocable or irrevocable. A testamentary trust goes into effect when you pass away.

Whether you create a living trust or a testamentary trust, we have the ability to tailor your trust to suit your individual needs. I have helped clients create a wide variety of trusts, including:

  • Special needs trusts: If you have a loved one who is receiving governmental benefits, this type of trust can allow you to give a financial gift or an inheritance without impacting his or her eligibility to receive government benefits.
  • Trusts for minors: These types of trusts are designed to protect the finances of children or loved ones who are unable to care for themselves. If you have a child with a developmental disorder or who requires special care, this trust can help provide him or her with care and support into the future.
  • Life insurance trusts: This is a type of irrevocable, living trust that can help you avoid federal taxes on your life insurance benefits.
  • Charitable trusts: A charitable trust allows you to leave a portion of your estate to a charity. I help clients set up all types of charitable trusts, including charitable lead trusts and charitable remainder trusts.

In addition to helping clients with estate planning issues and trusts, I am also an experienced tax attorney. This allows me to provide my clients with estate tax advice and counsel.
